Objectives and Contents

Objectives: This course aims to equip students with knowledge of the mechanical properties of materials by teaching fundamental concepts in the mechanics of deformable bodies, such as stress, deformation, and loss of material strength. Students will gain the ability to design bars under axial force, shear, and simple bending conditions.
Content: This course covers the fundamental principles of strength of materials, Hooke's law, types of deformation and ideal materials, cross-sectional shapes and area calculations of structural members, centre of gravity calculations, moment of resistance, moment of inertia calculations, radius of gyration, the relationship between load and stress, section calculation of bars made of various materials under tensile force, section calculation of bars made of various materials under compressive force, shear force and strength calculation, uniaxial bending theory, the bending-stress relationship, and section area calculation of bars under simple bending effects.
